One of the big players in the Matrix sequels may be returning for the upcoming fourth film in the Merovingian. According to French film site Allocine, Lambert Wilson is in negotiations to reprise his role as the rogue program within the Matrix that appeared in The Matrix Reloaded, who provides a safe haven for exiled or obsolete programs that wish to hide in the Matrix and provided an obstacle to Neo and Trinity as they tried to acquire the Keymaker (Randall Duk Kim ).
The Merovingian’s scenes are somewhat polarizing among Matrix fans, as the character delves deep into the convoluted philosophical aspects of the franchise and is one of the first major characters to do so, signalling the shift in the sequels away from the more straight-forward aspects of the plot. Lambert reprised the role in The Matrix Revolutions as well as voicing him in the Enter the Matrix video game.
Allocine notes that Wilson told them that his main concern is scheduling, as he has theatrical commitments that may conflict with the production. If he does sign on, he would join Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jonathan Groff in the cast of the film, which begins filming later this year for a May 21st, 2021 release date.
