Yeah, I like that idea. Those are actually a few of the most requested ideas I've seen.
1) Morpheus' origin. 2) The Second Renaissance.
The second one people request less, probably because the Animatrix already showed it in video form, and they would rather see a story they've never seen before. (See The Last Airbender as an example of how that can go. And for the record, Shyamalan's script was pretty much a masterpiece... ghost-writers and studio interference for the fail!)
I'd be curious, if they took more of a sequel route, how/if they would deal with the story as it was continued in Matrix Online. Or would it be more likely that they would just pull a Disney and decanonize it?
I think if they did follow up with a direct sequel, they could decanonize the Matrix Online without losing too much. I mean... I played The Matrix Online, and I don't even remember what the story was.
I would like to see them either continue where we left off, perhaps a few years later, or do another story somewhere else in the timeline. There's a lot of story to tell, and some ideas haven't been fleshed out yet.
Agreed–it's hard to imagine them keeping The Matrix Online as canon. I never did play it, but I followed where the story went on the periphery...it was interesting, but I think Warner Bros. would just as soon wipe the slate completely clean post-Revolutions than have to dance around any hanging threads left by TMO.
