Why did the machines let Bane live?

At the end of Reloaded we find that the machines have killed all of the humans except for Bane, who was found unconscious. At this point Smith is unplugged and already a threat to the machines. Why is he the only one left alive?

Who the **** knows. I think they just wanted to keep him in the 3rd movie for an interesting cliffhanger for the end of the 2nd, that or he just hid really well.
