How did Cypher get into the Matrix alone?
Something that's been bugging me after watching the movie for the 30th time is how was it possible for Cypher to insert himself into the Matrix alone to have his dinner meeting with Agent Smith?
A few things to consider 1) doesn't someone have to be at the controls acting as the "operator" to put him in and out of the Matrix? 2) Isn't the "operator" aware when agents are in the vicinity? 3) How could Cyper have reached around and put that big plug in himself? Any theories would be welcome. |

Excerpt from the Project FAQ... you can add ETM's Ghost & Trinity scene as further evidence.
--- How did Cypher visit Smith? The typical answer is that Cypher prepared the visit ahead of time (before the conversation with Neo) and that an Operator is unnecessary for diving into the Matrix. But let's go deeper. In "The Art of The Matrix" Geof Darrow talks about concept art he did for the personal quarters of the crew. He points out that the crew have personal terminals for entering the Matrix in his illustration. In the movie you can see part of this setup behind Neo when Morpheous apologizes to him. So this is our view: The crew have terminals in their personal quarters for loading Construct programs... this makes sense for Mouse and his offer, heh. Dives into the Matrix, however, are dangerous so protocol dicates that they go in with at least an Operator and most likely dives are logged and restricted to deck terminal use. So we agree that Cypher was preparing for his dive when Neo came in, but we believe he was hacking ship security so that he could access the Matrix from his private terminal. This view eliminates any worry of being caught in the act. Also in "The Art of The Matrix" is an alternate introduction to The Matrix, where a lovesick hacker goes back to visit his still plugged in girlfriend. So apparently, in the Wachowskis' minds, private dives were never a problem. |

OK thats makes total sense cuz if you play Enter the Matrix. Ghost and Trinity use the terminals in Ghost's quarters so that they can spar.

Thank you Demas, I see you have great potential.
That is the best explation I have heard. I never thought about the personal terminals, but you would have to think they exist because of Mouse's "offer" to Neo. There must have been a way to spend some personal time in the Matrix unsupervised and Cypher had the know how to bypass security protocals. I am starting to believe! |

You guys have no idea how often this is brought up. I've seen this atleast 20 times on this forum... I guess its just due to the fact that most people aren't absolutely crazy about knowing every little bit.

When Neo walks in on Cypher at the hovercrafts Matrix console we see Cypher surprised by Neo and looking very very shifty. Neo asks Cypher if he always looks at The Matrix in code and Cypher tells him it's the only way unless you are actually in The Matrix. So from this we see that you do not actually have to be in The Matrix to manipulate events.
Cypher would have done a lot of the legwork for setting up the deception that led to Morpheus' capture via the console during his shifts. Also, if Cypher was on a graveyard shift while everyone else was sleeping he could take the risk and insert himself into The Matrix for short periods of time to do his dirty deeds and he would have a preset exit point prepared so he could exit The Matrix without the assistance of an Operator. All Cypher would have needed was a preset exit point where he could have gone to so he could get out. This would have been achieved by setting a designated phone exit point to ring at a specified time so he could get out (have you ever heard a phone ringing in the middle of the street for no reason? I have...). Whilst difficult surely to insert a steel prod into the back of your head, Cypher may have been able to do it after some practice. Because we don't actually see a fixed requirement for someone to remove the prod doesn't mean it is a necessity, it just helps because of the obvious disorientation they experience. It could also be assumed that the crew would have some personal time to escape into The Matrix to get out of the general oppressiveness of the hovercraft as well. It could of been during one of these times that Cypher went and made the deal with Agent Smith, unlikely though because of the chance that Tank could have been looking over his shoulder. At the very least he may have done some of the research into his deception during these times as well. |

If they have personal ports or whatever, how do they get out of the Matrix? no Operator when your personally in the Matrix correct?

I have finally played Enter The Matrix and I now know about the personal in room terminals.
For those of you who haven't played the game ---> Trinity walks into Ghost's personal quarters while he is enjoying some recreational time in the Matrix alone (using a personal in room link up). Trinity then loads herself into the program (sitting next to Ghost on a 2nd terminal) and they have sparing practice together. They automatically exit the sparing program, sorta like in Star Trek when they say "computer, end program" on the holodeck. So far, from what I gather, you can only load recreational programs and sparing programs on these personal terminals. It doesn't seem you should be able to hack directly into the Matrix. We are then pointed to the theory mentioned before that Cypher must have been able to bypass computer securities and protocols and set up the meeting with Agent Smith by doing some dirty work. It would then seem you would still have to have an operator to bring you out of the Matrix, but Cypher must have set up a timed phone call on some secure line to automically bring himself out.

I thought it was just on Cypher's shift. But I may be wrong... the operator would've seen him chatting with Smith in the code...

Well according to an interview with the writers (which you can access using the dvd-rom features, online events), the scene where he tells neo to run whenever he sees an agent - he was setting up the meeting then (that is why he gets a fright). If he is a programmer he could interact directly with the matrix, in other words he could create an avatar and control it with his playstation controller LOL. No seriously.
You only have to be plugged in to insert your REAL mind into the matrix, but a programmer like Cypher could do it with coding. He is just using the matrix equivalent of IRC. |
